Why become a Credit Union Member

What are the benefits to joining a credit union

Credit unions, being member-owned and not-for-profit financial institutions, offer several advantages over traditional banks, including:

  • Better rates: Credit unions often provide higher interest rates on savings accounts and lower interest rates on loans (e.g., auto loans, mortgages, personal loans, and credit cards) compared to banks.
  • Lower fees: You’ll typically find fewer and lower fees at credit unions, such as reduced or waived fees for overdrafts, late payments, and account maintenance.
  • Personalized service and member focus: Credit unions prioritize building relationships with their members, offering a more tailored approach to financial services and advice. They are also focused on their members’ financial well-being and may offer resources like credit counseling and financial education.
  • Community commitment: Many credit unions are deeply rooted in their communities, supporting local events, businesses, and organizations through their investments and initiatives. EPIC is a CDFI Credit Union. That stands for Community Development Financial Institution. A CDFI credit union is a specialized, non-profit financial cooperative certified by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to provide fair, responsible, and affordable banking services to underserved, low-income, and marginalized communities. These credit unions focus on community development, offering loans for small businesses, housing, and financial education to individuals who may not qualify for traditional, mainstream banking services.
  • Democratic control: As a member, you have a say in the credit union’s operations through a one-member, one-vote system, giving you direct influence on decisions that affect the institution.
  • Accessibility: Credit unions often participate in extensive, surcharge-free ATM networks, providing convenient access to your money nationwide. Many also offer robust online and mobile banking services for convenient account management.
  • Federal insurance: Eligible deposits at credit unions are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), providing the same level of protection as the FDIC for bank deposits.

In essence, credit unions aim to benefit their members rather than generate profits for shareholders, leading to a more customer-centric approach with potentially more favorable financial terms.

What’s the difference between a Credit Union and a Bank?

Credit Unions versus Banks

Credit unions offer a compelling alternative to traditional banks, often excelling in areas that directly benefit their members. Here’s how credit unions can be better than banks:

  • Member Ownership and Focus: Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned and operated by their members. Unlike banks, which are driven by profit for shareholders, credit unions prioritize the financial well-being of their members. This means any earnings generated are reinvested back into the institution, providing benefits such as higher interest rates on savings accounts and lower interest rates on loans.
  • Lower Fees and Better Rates: Due to their not-for-profit structure, credit unions typically offer lower fees and more competitive interest rates on savings and loans compared to banks. This can result in reduced or eliminated monthly maintenance fees, lower overdraft fees, and generally more affordable borrowing options.
  • Personalized Service and Community Involvement: Credit unions are renowned for their exceptional member service and focus on building strong relationships within their communities. They often offer personalized financial counseling, educational resources, and actively participate in local initiatives and events. This fosters a sense of community and mutual support that can be less common in larger, more impersonal banking environments.
  • Accessibility and Technology: While credit unions historically had fewer branches and ATMs, many now offer comprehensive online and mobile banking platforms and participate in shared ATM networks, expanding access to their services. Some networks like CO-OP Shared Branch and Allpoint offer tens of thousands of surcharge-free ATMs nationwide.
  • Democratic Governance: As member-owned institutions, credit unions operate on a democratic principle where each member has voting rights and can influence the institution’s decisions by electing the volunteer board of directors.

In summary, if you prioritize personalized service, lower fees, competitive rates, community involvement, and a financial institution that prioritizes your financial well-being over profit, a credit union may be a better choice than a bank. However, the best choice depends on your specific financial needs and priorities, and it is always advisable to compare individual credit unions and banks to find the right fit.

What’s better? Checking or Savings Accounts?

Checking and savings accounts are both deposit accounts that allow you to deposit, store, and withdraw money, but they serve different primary purposes and have different features.

Checking accounts

  • Primarily for managing day-to-day spending, paying bills, making purchases, and withdrawing cash.
  • They offer quick access through debit cards, checks, ATMs, online banking, and mobile apps.
  • They’re designed for frequent transactions, typically with no limits on the number of withdrawals or transactions.
  • Generally earn little to no interest, though some high-yield checking accounts do exist.
  • They often include debit cards, checks, direct deposit, overdraft protection, online bill pay, mobile banking, and ATM networks.
  • Yours may have monthly maintenance fees (often waivable), overdraft fees, and out-of-network ATM fees.

Savings accounts

  • Are primarily for storing money for financial goals, whether short-term (like a vacation or emergency fund) or long-term (like a down payment on a house).
  • These May have restrictions on the number of monthly withdrawals or transfers to encourage saving.
  • These accounts are not intended for frequent transactions.
  • Typically – they earn higher interest rates than checking accounts, allowing your money to grow over time.
  • Features: Often include online banking, mobile banking, and the ability to set up automatic transfers from checking to savings.
  • These too May have monthly maintenance fees (often waivable), excess withdrawal fees, and inactivity fees.

Which is better?

Neither account is inherently “better” than the other, as they serve different purposes.

  • Checking accounts are better for: Everyday spending and transactions, managing bills, and easily accessing funds as needed.
  • Savings accounts are better for: Storing money for specific goals, building an emergency fund, and earning interest on your deposits.

Many financial experts recommend having both a checking and a savings account to effectively manage your finances.

  • Use your checking account for daily expenses and bills, says NerdWallet.
  • Use your savings account to build up an emergency fund and save for larger purchases or financial goals.

Key considerations when choosing

  • Look at the Fees or Benefits: see if there are fees associated and if so, are they just fees or are they linked to benefits you actually want?
  • Interest Rates: Compare interest rates, especially for savings accounts, to maximize your earnings.
  • Minimum Balance Requirements: Check for any minimum balance requirements to avoid fees.
  • Features: Evaluate the specific features offered by different accounts to ensure they align with your banking habits and needs.

By understanding the differences and benefits of both checking and savings accounts, you can choose the best combination to achieve your financial goals.

How do I protect myself against fraud?

Fraud is everywhere. But there are some basic things you can do to significantly reduce your risk and protect you, and your monies from fraud.

Protecting yourself from fraud requires vigilance and proactive measures. Here are a handful of key actions you can take:

  1. Be wary of unsolicited contact and suspicious offers: Fraudsters often initiate contact via phone calls, emails, or even in-person visits with enticing, unrealistic offers, or urgent demands. Always be skeptical of claims that are “too good to be true” or requests for immediate action or payment. If something sounds off, trust your instincts and don’t hesitate to disconnect or disregard the request. And remember, your bank will NEVER call you asking for your account or personal information…we know your information!
  2. Secure your online presence and devices: Use strong, unique passwords for all your online accounts, incorporating a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to help create and store complex passwords securely. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all accounts that offer it.
  3. Protect your personal information: Never share personal information like your Social Security number, bank account details, or passwords with anyone unless you initiated the contact and are certain of the legitimacy of the request. Be cautious about the information you share on social media, especially details like your address, phone number, or date of birth.
  4. Monitor your financial accounts and credit reports: Regularly review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions and report suspicious activity immediately. You can also set up alerts with your financial institutions to receive notifications about account activity, such as large withdrawals.
  5. Be cautious of phishing attempts: Carefully examine any suspicious emails or text messages, especially those asking for personal or financial information. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments from unknown or suspicious sources. Instead of clicking, independently verify the sender’s legitimacy by contacting the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website.
  6. Don’t pay with unconventional methods: If someone demands payment using untraceable methods like wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency, it is a significant red flag.
  7. Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi networks: Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured and vulnerable to eavesdropping. Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can encrypt your internet traffic, providing a layer of security when using public networks.
  8. Understand common scam tactics: Fraudsters use various tactics, such as creating a sense of urgency or emergency, impersonating trusted individuals or organizations, or dangling attractive but unrealistic offers. Learn about common scams and their warning signs to better recognize and avoid them.
  9. Report suspected fraud: If you encounter or fall victim to a scam, report it to the appropriate authorities, That includes your credit union but also the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. Reporting fraud helps law enforcement agencies identify and prosecute scammers, as well as spot trends and educate the public about emerging threats.

By implementing these preventative measures and staying informed about the latest fraud schemes, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of fraud.

What’s the difference between debit and credit cards?

A credit card is a card whose holder has been granted a revolving credit line. This card provides the holder with the ability to make purchases and/or cash advances up to a predetermined limit. The credit granted can be paid in full by the end of a specified period or in part, with the balance taken as extended credit. Interest can be charged on the transaction amounts from the date of each transaction or only on the extended credit where the credit granted has not been paid in full.

Before getting a credit card, do your homework. It’s important to know the terms before agreeing to the card. At a minimum, you should know: the annual percentage rate (APR), the grace period to pay the full balance without being charged interest, if there are any annual fees just for having the card, how finance charges are calculated, and if there are any transaction charges for such things as transferring a balance, late payments, cash advances, and going over the credit limit.

A debit card (also known as a check card or ATM card) looks like a credit card, but it functions differently. A debit card is a card with which you can withdraw funds from your checking or savings account using an automated teller machine (ATM). A debit card can be used in place of writing a check at most, if not all, merchants. A debit card can also be used as a credit card in order to purchase goods and services. This is called a Point-of-Sale Purchase or POS. However, payment for the transaction comes directly from your account instead of a credit card transaction in which funds are loaned to the buyer by the credit card issuer.

Debit cards typically have no fees involved if you are careful when you use it. Be sure to check if your bank charges a fee if you use another bank’s ATM. Sometimes these fees can be upwards of $4.00 for every transaction. The main negative of debit cards is failing to immediately deduct transactions from your checking account. Failing to be careful with debit card transactions can cause a financial disaster. You could be out of money and get hit with an overdraft fee, and this can spiral out of control. Always know exactly how much money you have in the bank before you make a purchase using your debit card. That $3 coffee can cost you almost $40 if you get hit with an overdraft fee!

Choosing A Payment Method: Debit Card vs. Credit Card

Determining a method of payment that is most suitable for each purchase can be tricky. Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, and it’s up to you to choose the most suitable method depending on your needs.

If you’re a compulsive buyer, then debit cards are the best method of payment for you. Knowing that money you actually have will be deducted from your account each time you shop, will reduce the temptation to purchase items you dont need. However, credit cards tend to encourage spending because you are not spending money that you already have because the money is being loaned to you and you have to pay it back.

Rewards in Purchases

Credit cards tend to reward you with cash back deals and discounts if the monthly credit card bill is paid on time. Therefore, by using your credit card, you stand to gain a lot if you can always pay in full each month. All you need to do is to learn how to control your spending.

Online Purchases and Fraud

A credit card is usually less risky to use for online purchases. In case one’s information is hacked and used to pay bills, then it’s up to the credit card issuer to do all that they can to get the money back. Debit cards, on the other hand, are riskier when it comes to online purchasing. When hacked and used to make purchases, the debit card owner suffers the loss. Very rarely will a bank put that money back into your account. It is usually up to the debit card holder to get back their money.

Improving Credit History

Having a credit card and maintaining a good credit history helps improve your credit rating and will increase your credit score over time. Your credit history can be used in the future to obtain an auto loan or a mortgage. However, this is not the case for debit cards. Debit card records cannot be used to show your eligibility for a loan. Debit card usage and history is not reported to the major credit bureaus and does not show up on your credit report. So using a debit card has zero effect on your credit score or creditworthiness.

Security

Debit cards are pretty secure in the real world if they are lost, stolen, or misplaced. Someone would need to know your 4 or 5 digit security PIN to be able to use your debit card. Conversely, credit cards are usually less secure because someone could always fake your signature. Both cards are not very secure when it comes to online shopping because you don’t need your PIN or signature for online purchases. The online security technology used on credit cards and debit cards is pretty low, hence making them both susceptible to fraud when it comes to shopping online.

Conclusion

We’ve laid out the main differences between credit cards and debit cards. We’ve also discussed the similarities. Now, it’s up to you to use each card wisely and in the best possible way. Remember, that credit card debt is pretty hard to get out of and it can sneak up on you. Stay hyper focused and diligent when using both your debit card and credit cards.

How do I improve my Credit Score?

Here are five key steps to boost your credit score:

  1. Pay your bills on time: This is the single most important factor influencing your credit score. Late or missed payments can significantly hurt your score. Set up automatic payments or reminders to ensure all your bills are paid on or before the due date.
  2. Reduce your credit card balances and utilization rate: High credit card balances can lower your score. Aim to keep your credit utilization ratio (the amount of credit you use compared to your total credit limit) below 30%, and ideally even lower. If possible, pay off your credit card balances in full each month.
  3. Review your credit reports and dispute errors: Get a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) at least once a year through AnnualCreditReport.com.
  4. Keep old credit accounts open: The length of your credit history, including the average age of your accounts, is a factor in your credit score. Unless you’re paying high annual fees, it’s generally beneficial to keep older accounts open and active, even if you don’t use them frequently. Consider putting a small recurring bill on an old card and setting up automatic payments to keep it active and building positive payment history.
  5. Limit new credit applications and inquiries: Applying for new credit results in a “hard inquiry” on your credit report, which can slightly lower your score. Limit applications to only necessary credit products, especially if you’re planning a major loan application like a mortgage or car loan. If you’re comparing loan rates, try to keep your applications within a short timeframe (e.g., 14-45 days) to minimize the impact on your score.

By consistently implementing these steps, you can establish positive credit habits, build a strong credit history, and ultimately improve your credit score.

How do I set up a youth account?

To set up a youth account at a credit union, you’ll typically need the minor’s birth certificate and Social Security number, plus your own government-issued ID (like a driver’s license) and Social Security number, as a parent or guardian must be a joint owner to provide identification and financial responsibility for the account. The credit union will also need the child’s full name, date of birth, and address, often requiring both you and the minor to visit a branch with these documents.

Required Documents for the Minor:

  • Social Security Number (SSN): Essential for tax reporting and identification.
  • Birth Certificate: Serves as primary proof of age and identity.
  • Other IDs (if available): A passport or school ID might be requested as supplementary ID.

Required Documents for the Parent/Guardian:

  • Government-Issued Photo ID: Driver’s license, passport, or state ID.
  • Social Security Number (SSN): For identity verification and account linkage.
  • Proof of Address: A utility bill or similar document might be needed.

Key Steps & Considerations:

  1. Joint Ownership: A parent or legal guardian must be a joint owner on the account until the minor turns 18.
  2. In-Person Visit: Often, both the parent/guardian and the minor need to be present to sign documents.
  3. Credit Union Membership: You’ll need to meet the credit union’s membership requirements (e.g., live in a certain area, work for a specific employer).
  4. Age-Specific Accounts: Credit unions offer different accounts for various age groups (e.g., under 12, teens 13-16) with varying features like debit cards or scholarship access

How old do you have to be to open an account?

Any adult can open an account. If you are still a minor, we can open an account for you but a parent or guardian will have to be named on the account as well. We open youth accounts all the time.

Teaching kids about financial literacy early in life is key to helping them develop lifelong, healthy money habits that make their dreams possible. Unfortunately, financial literacy education often does not get the attention it deserves, and when it comes to important money matters, helping kids learn healthy habits early is better than leaving them to learn from costly mistakes.

Youth accounts are the first step in teaching our kids how to achieve financial success as adults.

Here are a few advantages of opening a youth account:

  • Develops good savings habits at a young age.
  • Reinforces basic math skills.
  • Teaches kids financial responsibility at an early age.
  • Teaches kids the value of money…and that it doesn’t grow on trees.
  • Helps teach them to set goals and save for the things they want.

Only a small deposit of $10 is needed to open and maintain the account. Dividends are paid monthly, which helps the account “grow”.

To open a youth account, parent/guardian must:

  • Have minor’s birth certificate and social security card.
  • Be joint on the account.
  • Have 2 forms of ID and Social Security card.

Acceptable forms of Primary ID include:

  • Louisiana State Driver’s License or ID & Social Security Card
  • Passport & Social Security Card
  • Military ID & Social Security Card

Acceptable forms of Secondary ID include:

  • Credit Card
  • Work ID, etc.

We even partnered with ZOGO, a mobile app that teaches young people financial literacy and rewards them for learning and saving!

Why does my credit score matter?

Your credit score matters because it’s a three-digit number lenders use to judge your financial reliability, directly impacting your ability to get loans (mortgages, auto, credit cards) and the interest rates you pay, potentially saving or costing you thousands; a good score unlocks better financial products, lower insurance premiums, easier apartment rentals, and even affects utility deposits and some employment opportunities by signaling lower risk.

Key reasons your score is crucial:

  • Loan & Credit Approval: A strong score increases your chances of getting approved for major loans like mortgages, car loans, and new credit cards.
  • Lower Interest Rates: Higher scores qualify you for lower interest rates, saving significant money over the life of a loan (e.g., thousands on a mortgage).
  • Better Financial Terms: It gets you more favorable terms, including higher credit limits and better rewards on credit cards.
  • Housing: Landlords often check credit to decide if you’re a reliable tenant.
  • Insurance: Insurers use credit-based scores to set premiums for auto and home insurance, with better scores leading to lower costs.
  • Utilities & Cell Phones: A good score can help you avoid security deposits for setting up new services like electricity, gas, or cell phone plans.
  • Employment: Some employers review credit reports (not always scores) as part of the hiring process to assess responsibility.

In essence, a higher score signals you’re a responsible borrower, opening doors to financial opportunities and saving you money, while a lower score signals higher risk, leading to denials or more expensive terms.

What happens when your CD or Share Certificate Matures?

When a Certificate of Deposit, or at Credit Unions a Share Certificate matures, its fixed term ends, giving you a short “grace period” (usually 7-10 days) to decide: withdraw funds, renew for a new term (maybe adding money), or reinvest elsewhere, like a high-yield savings account; if you do nothing, the bank typically auto-renews it for a new term at the current rates, potentially locking your money in if you miss the window to access it penalty-free.
